Machine Shop Safety/Orientation Class
The Machine Shop Safety/Orientation class is offered only to students, staff and faculty of the College of Engineering. Successful completion of the class will allow use of most of the machinery and equipment in the EFL Student Machine Shop area. This class is normally not sufficient training to enable students to work with machine tools without appreciable help from EFL staff, nor is this safety training sufficient for working in other machine shops on campus.
This class consists of 10 hours of instruction and demonstrations over three separate sessions, and students will be required to complete a small project on the lathe and another project on the mill. The class covers the following topics:
- The EFL Safety Policy and safe operation of shop machinery, highlighting safety aspects of shop and location of important information.
- Fundamentals of lathe use, including facing, turning, drilling, tapping, and proper cleaning of machine tools.
- Fundamentals of mill use, including setting up a mill vise, side milling, face milling, drilling, tapping, and proper cleaning of machine tools.
Students should plan on spending a significant amount of time outside of class sessions to complete the mill and lathe projects. A quiz will be given at the end of the third session of a class. A student must receive a passing score on the quiz and complete the mill and lathe projects by the start of the third session in order to be granted access privileges to the EFL Machine shop.
Machine Shop Safety/Orientation classes will be held:
- September 30th, 1 to 5 PM; October 2nd, 8:30 AM to 12 noon; October 8th, 1:30 to 5 PM
- October 21st, 1 to 5 PM; October 23rd and 30th, 8:30 AM to 12 noon
- November 16th and 18th, 1 to 5 PM; November 24th, 1:30 to 5 PM
- December 14th, 16th, and 18th, 8:30 AM to 12 noon
