College of Engineering 50th Anniversary

To celebrate the College of Engineering’s Golden 50th Anniversary in 2012, a series of events are planned on the Davis campus and in the Bay Area. Exhibitions at UC Davis, website features, and special events will celebrate the first 50 years of the College of Engineering, and enlarge the vision for our success in the next half-century.

CHRISTOPHER J. KANE

Although an internationally recognized cancer surgeon, pioneering researcher and global expert in the treatment of interstitial cystitis — a particularly painful disease that causes swelling and scarring of the bladder wall — Dr. Christopher J. Kane's patients know him best as a compassionate, deeply concerned caregiver. This devoted attention to bedside manner led to Kane being named a "Best Doctor in San Diego" in both 2009 and '10; he also was cited as a 2010 Healthcare Champion by the San Diego Business Journal.

Dr. Kane is a professor of surgery/urology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he's also chief of the Division of Urology, and director of the Urology Residency Training Program. He specializes in prostate cancer and renal cell carcinoma, and also is celebrated for his expertise in robot-assisted and other minimally invasive procedures for urologic surgery.Christopher Kane

Dr. Kane received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services of the Health Sciences, served his surgical internship at the Oakland Naval Medical Center and the UC Davis East Bay Combined Program, and completed his residency in urology at UC San Francisco and the Oakland Naval Medical Center. He subsequently started the robotic surgery program at UC San Francisco and at San Francisco's VA Medical Center. He served as a military officer and surgeon in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, earning military honors such as the Navy Commendation Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He finally retired as captain in the United States Navy Reserve medical corps in 2009.

Dr. Kane joined UC San Diego as professor of surgery and chief of urology in September 2007. In 2008, he and a research team released a study with highly encouraging news for those diagnosed with kidney cancer: Thanks to the meticulous study of more than 200,000 kidney cancer patients over a 12-year period, Dr. Kane was able to report that today's U.S. patients are much more likely to be diagnosed with smaller tumors, in the disease's earliest, most treatable stages; this leads to a higher survival rate.

In the spring of 2011, Dr. Kane was named the inaugural holder of the C. Lowell and JoEllen Parsons Endowed Chair in Urology, a $2.5 million position that will enable him to recruit world-class talent and continue his ground-breaking work at UC San Diego. A few months earlier, Dr. Kane also received the 2011 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Medal from UC Davis.
