Emeritus Professor Dick Walters Builds Cultural Bridges

With an international background and more than 40 years of experience in computer science, medicine, and distance learning, Dick Walters is the natural choice to help University Outreach and International Programs develop these types of collaborative agreements between UC Davis and Egypt. "It just fits my life," Walters explains. "My commitment to promoting international cooperation and to promoting ties between UC Davis and the Middle East is very strong."

Toward the Right Mix: Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

When Karen McDonald was recruited to UC Davis in 1985, the campus issued a press release about it. Today, her department — Chemical Engineering and Materials Science — and the Department of Chemistry have some of the nation's highest ratios of female faculty, when compared with similar departments at other schools.

FROM THE DEAN

Engineers, by their very nature, believe in the future.

But the challenges of the future are difficult: communities thirsty for renewable, clean energy; complex, serious health challenges; and a global information network that is both promising and vulnerable.

The UC Davis College of Engineering is striving to meet these challenges with technical solutions that will serve California, the nation and the world. And we are educating the next generation of engineers who will address socially significant needs and improve the quality of life for people everywhere.
