Chemical Engineering '80

Pam Fair appreciates good engineers "because they can make things work," an ethic that she applies to life in general. As vice president of customer operations at San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Co., Fair uses her engineer's understanding of processes to do a better job of managing operations. But she makes things work in other areas of life, as well.

Fair is on the board of directors of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a vice chair of the UC Davis Foundation Board of Trustees and a member of the Dean's Executive Committee for the College of Engineering.

A longtime donor to the College of Engineering and campus, Fair says, "Giving to UC Davis and Engineering is a good investment in the future of California and in the students who will come here." She explains that by giving to scholarships, donors can make attending college possible for students with financial need and at the same time help the College to attract the best and brightest applicants.

Fair was inspired at a young age to study engineering because she had an uncle who was an engineer. At UC Davis she found a tight-knit group of friends in chemical engineering and professors who wanted to make sure their students succeeded. "Davis is a very grounding sort of place, where people just care about you. It was a nice place to get to know people and stay connected over the years, a place that makes you want to help all the time."
