Safety Classes
General Safety Orientation
Jeffrey L. Feerer, Ph.D., P.E., Director of Facilities and EH&S, College of Engineering
This class is specifically targeted at new graduate students, Student Assistants, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering. The class includes an introduction to the EH&S resources available to the graduate students, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering, and provides the initial safety training on the requirements of State and Federal regulations and university policies. Topics include an introduction to the department Illness and Injury Prevention Programs, Hazard Communication, Basic Chemical Laboratory Safety, Spill Response Guidelines, and Building Emergency Plans.
This class is offered specifically upon request to departments or research groups within the College of Engineering.
This training must be completed by all graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, staff, and faculty new to the College of Engineering. Departments, Principal Investigators, and Supervisors may also provide this training as part of the initial safety orientation for new faculty, staff, and students.
Chemical Safety in Laboratories

This class satisfies initial awareness training specified by the OSHA Laboratory Standard for personnel working in laboratories that use chemicals. The class covers basic laboratory chemical safety awareness, including handling and storage of chemicals, personal protective equipment, MSDSs, labeling, emergency response, and proper disposal of hazardous waste.
This class is offered specifically upon request to departments or research groups within the College of Engineering.
This training class, or "Chemical Safety" offered by campus EH&S, or a class covering equivalent topics must be completed by all new students, staff, and faculty who handle chemicals or work in areas where chemicals are stored. Departments, Principal Investigators, and Supervisors may also provide this training as part of the initial safety orientation for new faculty, staff, and students.
Machine Shop Safety

This class covers machine shop safety and good machining practices. Class time is approximately 10 hours, with two projects that must be completed outside of class within one week of the end of the first class session.
This class is offered as needed, at least once per month at a minimum.
Pre-enrollment registration is required; enrollment is limited to 4 students per class. Enroll by signing up in person in 1220 Bainer Hall. This class is required of all students, staff, and faculty who want to use the machine shop in 1220 Bainer Hall.
