Safety Classes

General Safety Orientation

Jeffrey L. Feerer, College of Engineering EH&S Coordinator

This class is an introduction to the EH&S resources available to the students, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering, and provides the initial safety training on the requirements of State and Federal regulations and university policies. Topics include an introduction to the department Illness and Injury Prevention Programs, Hazard Communication, Basic Chemical Laboratory Safety, Spill Response Guidelines, and Building Emergency Plans.

Class Offered: Wednesday, October 17, from 1-3 pm, Thursday, October 18, from 9-11 am, and Friday, October 19, from 10-12 noon.

Location: 1065 Kemper Hall

Pre-enrollment registration is not required.This training must be completed by all graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, staff, and faculty new to the College of Engineering, and a refresher training session must be completed annually. Departments, Principal Investigators, and Supervisors may also provide this training as part of the safety orientation to the departments, research groups, or management units.

Chemical Safety

Debbie Decker, Office of Environmental Health & Safety

This class covers basic chemical safety, including handling and storage of chemicals, personal protective equipment, MSDSs, labeling, emergency response, and proper disposal of hazardous waste. This class is normally offered every three to four weeks by the campus Office of Environmental Health and Safety. In addition, a special session for College of Engineering is offered every Fall Quarter.

Special Sessions for College of Engineering: Monday, October 22, from 9-11 am and Thursday, October 25, from 1:30-3:30 pm

Location: 1065 Kemper Hall

Pre-enrollment registration is required. Enroll through the campus Office of Environmental Health and Safety at http://ehs.ucdavis.edu/train/classes/engineer.cfm. This training class or "Chemical Safety offered by College of Engineering" must be completed annually by all students, staff, and faculty who handle chemicals or work in areas where chemicals are stored.

Chemical Safety offered by College of Engineering

This class covers laboratory chemical safety, including handling and storage of chemicals, personal protective equipment, MSDSs, labeling, emergency response, and proper disposal of hazardous waste. This class is offered on an as needed basis for students, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering.

Class Offered: TBA

Pre-enrollment registration is not required. Contact the College of Engineering EH&S Coordinator (Jeff Feerer) to arrange a special Chemical Safety class. This training class or "Chemical Safety" offered by campus EH&S must be completed annually by all students, staff, and faculty who handle chemicals or work in areas where chemicals are stored.

General Electrical Safety

Lance Halsted, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

This class covers basic electrical safety in a laboratory setting, and is normally offered every Fall Quarter.

Class Offered:Tuesday, October 23, from 1-2 pm and Wednesday, October 24, from 1-2 pm

Location: 1065 Kemper Hall

Pre-enrollment registration is not required. This class must be completed by all students, staff, and faculty who work in a lab that uses electrical equipment other than computers and computer peripheral equipment. Departments, Principal Investigators, and Supervisors may also provide this training.

Machine Shop Safety

Mike Akahori, Engineering Design and Development Services

This class covers machine shop safety and good machining practices. Class time is approximately 8 hours, with two projects that must be completed within one week of the end of the class instruction.

Class Offered: as needed, usually every two to three weeks.

Pre-enrollment registration is required; enrollment is limited to 4 students per class. Enroll by signing up in person in 1220 Bainer Hall. This class is required of all students, staff, and faculty who want to use the machine shop in 1220 Bainer Hall.
