Major Advising
Each of the engineering departments provides academic advising by an undergraduate staff adviser and faculty advisers for the undergraduate major programs administered by the department. The staff advisers provide advice that includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Academic planning
- Degree requirements
- General education requirements
- Student petitions
- Options for students in academic difficulty
Faculty provide advice on career goals, choice of major, field of specialization, and elective courses.
You will meet with the departmental undergraduate staff adviser during UC Davis Orientation or during an orientation session at the beginning of your first quarter of enrollment. In this meeting, the advising program provided by the department will be described. Some departments have a team approach to advising in which you can meet with either a staff adviser or a faculty adviser to discuss any of the topics listed above. In other departments, you will be assigned a faculty adviser or you will be told how to choose a faculty adviser.
The College has implemented a mandatory annual advising requirement. You must satisfy this requirement each year during the quarter determined by the first letter or your last name: A-G during fall quarter; H-N during winter quarter; and O-Z during spring quarter. You are notified of the advising requirement through the telephone or Web course registration systems. You may register for classes for the quarter that you are first notified of the advising requirement. If you fail to meet the advising requirement during your first specified quarter, an advising hold is placed on your registration that prevents you from enrolling the next quarter, and checking your enrollments or making changes in your enrollments during the current quarter. You will have approximately four months to clear this advising hold. Consult your departmental online information on advising holds or contact your departmental undergraduate staff adviser for information on the procedures to be followed to satisfy the annual advising requirement.
To facilitate dialogue with your adviser on your program of study, use the advising worksheets. Copies are available from the departmental undergraduate staff advisers.

Mandatory Advising Holds
If you are in the College of Engineering, please see your departmental staff advisor to have your Engineering advising hold released. To assist students to complete their program in a timely manner and to ensure that students are prepared for courses, advising holds will be placed on students' registration packets. The quarter of your advising hold will be based upon the first letter of your last name as listed below.
It is strongly recommended that you NOT wait until the deadline, but instead have the hold lifted prior to finals of the given quarter of your hold - Fall (A-G), Winter (H-N) Spring (O-Z).
FALL 2009 ADVISING HOLDS (A-G)
A Fall advising hold needs to be lifted by January 4, 2010. Failure to do so will prevent you from changing your schedule for Winter Quarter 2010 (this includes rolling in from a waitlist) and you will be unable to register for Spring Quarter 2010.
WINTER 2010 ADVISING HOLDS (H-N)
A Winter advising hold needs to be lifted by March 25, 2010. Failure to do so will prevent you from changing your schedule for Spring Quarter 2010 (this includes rolling in from a waitlist)and you will be unable to register for classes for Fall Quarter 2010.
SPRING 2010 ADVISING HOLDS (O-Z)
A Spring advising hold needs to be lifted by September 2, 2010. Failure to do so will prevent you from changing your schedule for Fall Quarter 2010 (this includes rolling in from a waitlist)and you will be unable to register for classes for Winter Quarter 2011.
