Financial Support
The College of Engineering is committed to providing financial resources for students during their graduate education. Fellowships, nonresident tuition fellowships, in-state fee fellowships, teaching assistantships, graduate student research appointments, travel awards, dissertation funds, federal grants, student loans, emergency loans, and work-study employment are available to support engineering graduate students.
Academic Appointments:
Appointments to the graduate student titles may also provide a fee remission, a tuition waiver, or a partial health insurance waiver. Students may not be employed in excess of 50 percent time in any combination of graduate student academic titles.
Fellowships:
Information and resources on fellowship support for graduate students are available at the departmental offices, at the College of Engineering Graduate Study Office, at the Office of Graduate Studies, and at Shields Library.
A regularly updated College database of external engineering fellowship announcements
by grant agency may be found at under Fellowships.
Information and resources on fellowships funded by the University, and extramural support from outside sources including a broad searchable database of multi-discipline graduate fellowship announcements by grant agency are available at the University Office of Graduate Studies.
The Annual Register of Grant Support (available at the Shields Library) is another reference source of financial and grant support programs. The Annual Register lists grant support programs offered by agencies, foundations, corporations, and associations.
Training Grants and Training Programs
Financial Aid
The staff in the Graduate Financial Aid Office can help you apply for grants, loans, and work-study employment. (Under the work-study program, the employer pays a part of the student's wages and the government pays the rest.) Applications for financial aid are due approximately March 1. To be considered for financial aid, or for any awards based on financial need, you must file a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) no later than the last day of February, prior to the fall quarter of your enrollment. This form, submitted directly to the Federal Student Aid Program Office, Iowa City, Iowa, is used to determine financial need only. A full-time counselor for graduate financial assistance is available by appointment and holds scheduled drop-in hours.
