Welcome from the Dean of the College of Engineering, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, and Director of SD&R

It is vitally important that engineers are equipped with the technical, professional and personal skills to address the global challenges we face. This is our mission at the UC Davis College of Engineering - to provide students from every walk of life the opportunity to devote their talent and intelligence to solving problems that will make a tangible difference in the world. Through undergraduate research opportunities, professional and leadership development and rigorous academic preparation, we train engineers who are up to this challenge.

Enrique Lavernia, Dean College of Engineering

In order to take full advantage of the academic opportunities at UC Davis, I encourage you to consider getting involved in the research activities offered and supported by MORE (Mentorships and Opportunities for Research in Engineering) and CAMP (California Alliance for Minority Participation).

Gary Ford, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies, College of Engineering

SD&R promotes excellence through diversity across academic disciplines, gender orientation, religious, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Toward that effort, SD&R fosters a learning community that encourages students to work together synergistically. Too often, programs directed at minorities and women are wrongly perceived as remedial, lowering standards and expectations.

The proven track records of the NSF-funded California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) and Women In Engineering (WIE) programs dispel the myth and exemplify high standards of achievement. To date, 88 academically talented Davis CAMP undergraduates have received advanced degrees. The WIE program is a national model for advancing females in engineering careers.

I believe that excellence is achieved through expectations, dreams, risk-taking, and caring. Improving the quality of life requires sustainable long-term solutions and diversity is the marketplace of ideas. I welcome you to explore the many opportunities through the "Alliance for Academic Excellence" and work with staff colleagues.
