Promoting Global-minded Professionals
Diversity
SD&R enhances the academic experiences of talented, caring, and risk-taking students who have shown interest to meet the challenge of becoming global-minded professionals. SD&R actively promotes a broad diversity of student experiences, skills, backgrounds, interests and goals that will ultimately enhance the experiences of the students inside and outside the classroom that will better prepare them for the “ real world.”
SD&R incorporates diversity through a framework of goals and strategies in agreement with the UC Davis Vision, College of Engineering Vision, ABET, and Principles of Community. The integration of diversity into the SD&R programs, projects and activities is also in agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) guidelines of integrating diversity in their funding programs. SD&R broadens the opportunities and promotes the participation of students from underrepresented, economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
SD&R Director's Perspective on Diversity
What does this mean for the students and faculty members?
Embracing diversity into the SD&R programs can represent:
- For students- the opportunity to participate in programs and activities such as CAMP, WIE, and EJC.
- For faculty members- the opportunity for research funding for their students (scholarships and research programs), identifying undergraduate candidates, funds for students to travel to conferences, CAMP financial support (matching your funding) support letters for their NSF proposals (and for support of merit packets), and collaborative opportunities via NSF-funded California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) in Mathematics, Science and Engineering, the “Alliance for Academic Excellence,” students, and student organizations.
