Advising Holds

Academic Advising Holds

Students in the College of Engineering are required to meet with an academic advisor at least once a year. As a result, students have an advising hold placed on their record. This hold requires students to meet with their advisor to discuss educational, professional, personal goals and challenges. Not clearing the hold by the start date will affect the next quarter’s registration.

  • New First-Year Students and New First Term Transfer Students
  • During the 2020-2021 academic year, students who are in their first year at the university will have an advising hold placed for the fall 2020 quarter, requiring that you meet with your major advisor by November 30th, 2020.

New First-Year Students in Aerospace Science & Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering will have an advising hold for each quarter of their first year, and will meet with an advisor in the Engineering Undergraduate Office, located in 1050 Kemper Hall.

New First-Year International Students will have an advising hold for each quarter of their first year, and will meet with an international advisor in the Engineering Undergraduate Office, located in 1050 Kemper Hall.

Viewing Holds on Your Student Record

Advising holds show as alerts in Schedule Builder and OASIS. Carefully check the date of pending holds, which are informational only, highlighted in tan/light yellow, and do not prevent course registration. Current holds are highlighted in red and DO prevent course registration. Visit your department’s undergraduate advising website for specific instructions to clear the hold.

Here is a sample of how the alert will appear:

Holds for Students Changing Their Major

As long as you are listed as a College of Engineering student you must clear your hold. Students planning to change their major, or add an additional major are required to complete a Change of Major webform. The Change of Major form must be submitted to the appropriate academic advisors and dean’s offices involved.

What Happens if You Don't Satisfy the Annual Advising Requirement (Clear your hold)?

If you don’t see your advisor and have the hold cleared by the deadline, then you won’t be able to make any changes to your class schedule until the hold is removed and it may impact your ability to register for courses. We strongly recommend that you NOT wait until the deadline to get a hold cleared.
