Intro to Engineering Design

ENG 003 — "Introduction to Engineering Design" introduces students to the engineering design process through team-based, workshop-style learning. Students tackle real design challenges, build physical prototypes and develop the communication skills needed to present their ideas effectively.

At the end of the quarter, student teams present their prototypes at a showcase. Faculty, alumni, industry partners and other friends of the college provide feedback, giving students early experience sharing their work with real audiences.

Example ENG 3 Projects

  • Climate Resilience – Adapting humans, animals, and communities to the effects of climate change
  • Advancing Human Health – Addressing the needs of individuals with various medical conditions
  • Agricultural Adaptation – Adapting agricultural systems to produce sustainable food for a growing population
  • Assisting Education – Addressing the needs of the classroom for students and teachers in K-12 schools and colleges

What Students Gain in ENG 3

  • Practice applying engineering to real-world design problems
  • Hands-on experience early in their undergraduate career
  • Access to the ESDC and experience with 3D printing, designing, Arduino, etc.
  • Connect with the Next Level Research initiatives
  • Sense of belonging
  • Communication skills, including different types of presentation skills, to help with future courses and interviews
