BME Seminar Series: Imaging the Invisible: A Personal Journey Towards a Perfect Commercial Microscope

Dr. Rui Liu

Event Date

Location
Genome & Biomedical Sciences Facility, Auditorium, 1005

Dr. Rui Liu is currently a senior staff optical engineer at KLA, where he develops the industry-leading light microscopy solution - with a unit price tag of tens of millions USD for each - for patterned wafer inspection in the 3 nm process nodes and beyond. Prior to his current appointment at KLA, he had ~10 years of experience in various R&D roles at HHMI Janelia Research Campus, Allen Institute, General Electric, and Danaher, developing different light microscopy solutions for neurosciences and cell biology. He received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with designated emphasis in Biophotonics in 2012, from the NSF Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology at University of California, Davis, under the tutelage of Drs. Dennis L Matthews and James W Chan. His early academic research work pioneered the high-resolution imaging of synaptic structures deep in the mouse brain, leading to a series of publications on Nature Methods and Optical Society of America (OSA) journals. His engineering design of the wavefront engineered two-photon fluorescence microscope was the powerhorse to acquire the optical physiological data for the functional connectomics project at the Allen Institute. He served as the vice chair for the OSA optical imaging design technical group from 2015 to 2016.
