From ancient philosophy to modern engineering and public health, water holds profound symbolism and necessity to life. Among old and new threats to drinking water quality, lead contamination regained scientific and societal interest. This presentation will highlight two decades of research on the chemistry that affects water lead contamination. It will then identify water sampling and lead quantification strategies to assess human exposure. By challenging outdated paradigms, this contribution will make the case for lead-free water, a national priority in the USA.
