Presentation Abstract

Geotechnical Risk is responsible for a significant amount of construction claims as well as budget and schedule over-runs. In this presentation we will discuss geotechnical risk and how it drives the cost of construction. We will explore how a contractor approaches this risk and how they incorporate it into the projected cost of the project, through contingency costing and how that relates to the owner and the engineer. We will then introduce the concept of Geotechnical Baseline Reports, as a mechanism to help the contractor and the owner to share risk to help reduce unnecessary contingency and to help navigate claims for both the owner and contractor. Several Example will be shown. Throughout this discussion it will be emphasized why this is an important concept for design engineers and owners to understand.
