UC Davis Ranks Among Top Engineering Graduate Schools

The University of California, Davis College of Engineering is now ranked 34th out of more than 200 graduate schools nationwide that offer Ph.D. degrees in engineering, according to the U.S. News and World Report's ranking of 2023-2024 Best Graduate Schools released April 24. The college is among the top 13 percent of Ph.D. conferring colleges and schools of engineering at public institutions.

UC Davis ranked in the top 10 nationwide for its specialties in biological and agricultural engineering (third) and civil engineering (ninth).

Notable gains were made in electrical engineering, which advanced eight spots to No. 30 (top 13 percent among similar programs at public institutions), and civil engineering, which rose four. Biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science and engineering also moved up in the rankings.

"Among public institutions, all 10 of our engineering graduate programs are ranked in the top 20 in the nation," Dean Richard Corsi said, referencing the 10 engineering specialties considered by U.S. News and World Report that exist at UC Davis. "I am proud our college continues to be ranked among the best. It's evidence of our steadfast commitment to transformative research and a scholarly community of great faculty, staff and students."

The U.S. News and World Report ranking annually evaluates engineering graduate schools on a weighted score based on peer evaluations, research activity, student selectivity, and faculty resources (number of doctoral degrees, student-faculty ratios, percent of faculty in the National Academy of Engineering). Individual programs are based on peer assessments by department heads in each area.
