UC Davis Ranks Among Top Engineering Graduate Schools in 2025

The University of California, Davis College of Engineering ranked 19th among public universities and 34th among public and private universities that offer Ph.D. degrees in engineering, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of 2025 Best Graduate Schools released April 8. Out of the 222 universities that were surveyed, the college is among the top 13% of Ph.D. conferring colleges and schools of engineering at a public institution.

Biological and agricultural engineering ranked No. 3 and civil engineering ranked No. 9, placing them in the top 10% of graduate specialties offered at public institutions.

Environmental engineering made the most notable gain, rising five spots to No. 8, and is joined by biomedical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering in the top 15% of graduate programs at public institutions.

“I am so proud of our faculty, graduate students and post-docs, as well as the staff who support their research. In 2024, we hit an all-time high in research expenditures at over $800k per faculty member,” said Richard L. Corsi, dean of the UC Davis College of Engineering. “I am also proud of having three of our graduate programs in the top nine among public universities and the majority in the top 15% among all public colleges and schools of engineering in the U.S.”

The U.S. News & World Report ranking annually evaluates engineering graduate schools on a weighted score based on peer evaluations, research activity, student selectivity and faculty resources (number of doctoral degrees, student-faculty ratios, percent of faculty in the National Academy of Engineering). Individual programs are based on peer assessments by department heads in each area.
