“Engineering our Experimental AI Futures,” a conference co-hosted by the UC Davis Designated Emphasis in Computational Social Science, UC Davis AI Center in Engineering and the UC Davis Center for AI and Experimental Futures, will include 18 presentations from Ph.D. students from communication, sociology, and computer science, professors of law and cinema and digital media, and undergraduate researchers from data science and cognitive science.

A discussion panel will feature Martin Hilbert, chair of the UC Davis Designated Emphasis in Computational Social Science, Raissa D’Souza, associate Dean of Research and co-director of the UC Davis AI Center in Engineering, Colin Milburn, director of the UC Davis Center for AI & Experimental Futures and Seth Frey, an associate professor of communication, discussing “Will AI scholars replace us?”

"This event exemplifies the transformative synergy born at the nexus of engineering, humanities and social sciences as they confront emerging frontiers," said Hilbert, who co-organized the event. "The AI revolution's unprecedented velocity and depth demand precisely such intellectual cross-pollination. One of the goals of the UC Davis AI Center in Engineering is to build transformative collaboration on AI efforts across the UC Davis campus —an aspiration this event powerfully validates through its mutually enriching exchange of diverse perspectives."

Additional presentations will include lightning panels on large language models, social media, health and wellbeing and systems science.

"This is the first joint event between the UC Davis AI Center in Engineering, the UC Davis Center for AI and Experimental Futures and the Designated Emphasis in Computational Social Science, and I am very excited by the synergies and future joint events,” said D’Souza. “One remarkable strength of UC Davis in the AI space is the very strong and organic partnership we have between engineering, the humanities, and the social sciences. This brings the right partners together to forward our mission of leveraging AI for the betterment of humanity and the planet."
