UC Davis Professor Contributes to ‘State-of-the-Art’ Civil Engineering Book

Michele Barbato, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Davis, co-authored a chapter in the book recognized with a State-of-the-Art Civil Engineering Award by The American Society of Civil Engineers, or ASCE.

Founded in 1966, the award celebrates the most gifted civil engineers who review and interpret scientific and technical information for the benefit of their colleagues.

Titled Effects of Climate Change on Life-Cycle Performance of Structures and Infrastructure Systems: Safety, Reliability, and Risk, the award-winning book marks a massive collaboration between leading experts across five chapters.

Barbato worked with 20 other researchers to pen Chapter 3, “Impact of Climate Change on Infrastructure Performance.” He cowrote the sections dealing with wind load and load combinations and reviewed and edited other chapter sections.

“I am honored to be a co-author of this book that received the 2026 ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award,” Barbato said. “This recognition is particularly important to me as the content of the book aligns with and highlights the significance of my research on climate change adaptation and resilience, the goal of which is to advance engineering-based, real-world solutions that enable infrastructure systems and communities to better withstand evolving climate hazards and support a safer, more resilient and more equitable society.”
