UC Davis Chemical Engineering alumna Xiaonan Wang, M.S. ’12, Ph.D. ’15 was featured in Chemical Engineering Research and Design’s special November 2022 issue on women in chemical engineering.

Despite increasing gender parity in all STEM fields over the past several decades, women researchers and their work are still often underrepresented in chemical engineering. Therefore, the “Women in Chemical Engineering” issue recognizes and showcases 17 leading women scientists and engineers conducting pioneering research in their fields of study, including catalysis, systems engineering, pharmaceutical science and energy and environmental science and engineering.

Wang completed her M.S. and Ph.D. at UC Davis under the mentorship of Distinguished Professor Ahmet Palazoglu and Professor Nael El-Farra before continuing as a research associate at Imperial College London. She is now an associate professor and the head of the Smart Systems Engineering Lab at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, as well as an adjunct professor at the National University of Singapore.

She is known for her research in energy system modeling, data-driven modeling and optimization, process design and simulation, technoeconomic analysis and life cycle assessment.  She has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal and conference proceeding papers, was recognized as an IChemE Global Awards Young Researcher finalist in 2017 and has received multiple best paper awards at IEEE conferences.
