Club Spotlight: Women in Computer Science (WiCS)

The Women in Computer Science (WiCS) club aims to provide women pursuing computer science at UC Davis an empowering space by providing opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, hosting workshops to facilitate success in the major and bringing in mentors to encourage and coach WiCS members.

"I love that WiCS is the perfect spot for a beginner coder to come and learn what the major is all about because WiCS works hard to make sure every coder at every stage is included," said Maryam Aslam, who serves as the director of marketing for WiCS.

Aslam is excited about the many resources that hard-working members of WiCS provide to the computer science community to ensure that everyone feels like they belong, regardless of if they are women or not.

Among those efforts, WiCS is currently creating a guide for new computer science students to refer to in all computer-science-related matters, whether it be advice on class scheduling, a debrief on what each computer science class is like or a rundown of the pros and cons of the various computer science pathways one can choose to take. They are also doing weekly workshops for computer science students to learn specific skills, such as interviewing for a technical internship, learning Leetcode and networking in professional settings.

"The most rewarding part was finding members who were just as lost as I was when I was a freshman and to be able to help them navigate being a CS major, which I wish was a resource I had when I started," said Aslam.
