The UC Davis AI Center in Engineering has appointed Chen-Nee Chuah, professor of electrical and computer engineering and Child Family Professor in the College of Engineering, as co-director. Chuah will lead the center’s efforts to advance human health through artificial intelligence research and build strategic partnerships with UC Davis Health’s School of Medicine and School of Nursing.

Founded in 2024 by the College of Engineering, the center leverages AI for the betterment of humanity and the planet through advancements in foundational research, translational applications and educational efforts.

“I am excited about the opportunity to help facilitate interdisciplinary research in AI and computational health between our talented faculty and domain experts in UC Davis Health’s School of Medicine and School of Nursing,” Chuah said.

She noted the technological breakthroughs in smart sensing, imaging techniques, interpretable AI/ML algorithms, edge intelligence, security defense and privacy-preserving mechanisms advanced by faculty members in the college as having significant promise to cross-cut multiple disease domains.

“Quoting Albert Einstein, ‘Everyone has the power to make a dent in the universe’ — let us leverage the collective cross-causeway strength of our UC Davis-UC Davis Health village and make a positive dent together through our AI Center in Engineering.”

Chuah joins Dipak Ghosal, Bucher Family Chair and professor of computer science, as a co-director of the center. Raissa M. D'Souza, associate dean for research in the College of Engineering and professor of computer science and mechanical and aerospace engineering, is the center’s director.
