Saif Islam, an electrical and computer engineering professor and director of the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and Banatao Institute at the University of California, Davis, has received the 2024 SPIE Aden and Marjorie Meinel Technology Achievement Award.

The annual award recognizes outstanding technical accomplishments in optics, electro-optics, photonic engineering or imaging and honors the legacy of Aden and Marjorie Meinel, a husband-and-wife duo that pioneered solar energy and created advanced space telescope designs.

SPIE, the international not-for-profit society for professionals in optics and photonics, selected Islam for the award to recognize his influential innovations in ultrafast and highly efficient photodetectors. Photodetectors are sensors that can translate light particles into electrical signals and are crucial for optical communication systems and environmental sensing.

The society also cited Islam's illuminating research on the applications of low-dimensional materials, his active involvement in developing and implementing new materials and devices — for which he holds more than 40 patents as an inventor or co-inventor — and his leadership in the field of optics and photonics as reasons for why he received the award.

"I am deeply honored by this recognition, which holds great significance for me, both in my professional and personal life," Islam said. "My heartfelt gratitude goes to my research group, collaborators, mentors, my supportive family, and everyone who has wished me well."
