UC Davis Engineering Continues to Excel in Graduate Education
The College of Engineering at UC Davis continues to rank high among the top engineering programs in the country for graduate education, according to the 2015 edition of America’s Best Graduate School Rankings released by U.S. News & World Report on March 11, 2014. Among public engineering schools, UC Davis College of Engineering ranking rose one place for a tie for 18th. Among all public and private programs, the College of Engineering ranking increased from 33rd overall to a tie of 31st with Ohio State University. Programs at 193 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees were included in the rankings. The Civil Engineering graduate program achieved a top ten ranking for the first time, while the Biological Systems Engineering graduate program ranked 7th.
U.S. News & World Report reports that the peer assessment and recruiter assessment scores both increased slightly from last year for the College of Engineering. The GRE quantitative score increased from 161 to 163 (of a possible 170). The faculty membership in the National Academy of Engineering increased this year, as well as the total research expenditure and research expenditure per faculty member. The College of Engineering awarded 132 doctoral degrees in fiscal year 2013, up from increased from 114 in FY 2012. Most of the College of Engineering’s graduate programs showed gains this year as well, and all our programs continue to rank among the best engineering programs. Agricultural Engineering increased one spot to 7th. Civil Engineering rose three spots to a tie for 10th, while Environmental Engineering gained two spots to a tie for 11th. Other gains include Materials Science, up three spots to a tie for 22nd; Chemical Engineering, up one spot to a tie for 28th; Computer Science, climbing five spots to a tie for 34th; Electrical Engineering, gaining six spots to a tie for 34th; Mechanical Engineering, up one spot to a tie for 34th. Other programs that continue to show strength include Aerospace Engineering, a tie for 28th; Biomedical Engineering (20th); and Computer Engineering (35th). These specialty rankings are based only on assessments made by department heads in each area.
Among University of California engineering schools, Berkeley, San Diego and Los Angeles retained their engineering rankings among all public and private universities: (3rd, 14th, and 16th, respectively), followed by Santa Barbara (up one spot to a tie for 19th), Davis (up two spots to a tie for 31st), Irvine (38th), Riverside (69th) and Santa Cruz (81st).
