As a member of our college family, your care in all respects is extremely important to us. The events of the past week have been very upsetting and stressful, and we are all responding in different ways. Please know that our college is fully committed to a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all, as well as to your own individual success and well-being. We recognize some of you may be feeling overwhelmed as you navigate the end of the quarter, exams, research and/or your work.

Update on Engineering Student Design Center

To meet the rapid growth demands of our engineering and computer science programs, the new Engineering Student Design Center (ESDC) will include areas to accommodate instruction, student-client collaboration, rapid prototyping and more. This expansion of the current space from 9,000 sq. ft. to 23,000 sq. ft. will allow many more of our outstanding students to learn engineering design and entrepreneurship in a revitalized space. The new ESDC will also house the Student Startup Center, which is accessible to student entrepreneurs throughout campus.

UC Davis College of Engineering 2020 Undergraduate Rankings

The U.S. News and World Report 2020 rankings of America’s Best Colleges show that UC Davis’ College of Engineering is moving up the list. The College of Engineering was ranked 29 out of 206 universities that offer doctoral programs, which is up three places from last year.

Roland Faller named Associate Dean of Facilities and Capital Planning

Chemical Engineering professor Roland Faller will serve as the College of Engineering’s next Associate Dean of Facilities and Capital Planning, beginning July 1.

As associate dean, Faller will manage all College of Engineering capital projects and oversee space allocations, renovations and repairs, as well as new space construction. He will also serve as the college’s point of contact for space and capital planning across campus.

UC Davis climbs two spots in 2020 engineering graduate school rankings

The University of California, Davis rose two places from last year in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking of engineering graduate schools. The College of Engineering is now ranked 31st out of over 200 public and private institutions across the country, tied with Virginia Tech and the University of Colorado, Boulder. This is the second increase in ranking in as many years.

“Our college continues to increase in national visibility and our growing prominence is being recognized by both our academic peers and industrial leaders,” said Dean Jennifer Sinclair Curtis.

Alyssa Panitch Joins College of Engineering Leadership Team

Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Personnel and Planning. Her appointment was effective December 1, 2018. As a member of the College’s leadership team, Panitch will work closely with Dean Jennifer Curtis and other college and university leaders to promote the strategic interests of the College.

New American Ceramic Society award named after Alexandra Navrotsky

The American Ceramic Society (ACerS) has established a new award named after Distinguished Professor Alexandra Navrotsky that recognizes innovation in experimental thermodynamics of solids.

The award, which will be given every other year, was established by a gift from Navrotsky herself to the society to recognize and promote exceptional thermodynamics research over a two-year period. Winners will receive a $5,000 prize and will present their research at the ACerS annual meeting.
