Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Director Kim Budil Wraps up Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series

The College of Engineering Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series wrapped up on April 19 with the director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, or LLNL, Kim Budil visiting campus. The 13th director of the LLNL, Budil oversees an annual operating budget of about $2.9 billion and a workforce of about 8,300 employees – about 3,000 of whom have been hired over the last three years.

UC Davis Ranks Among Top Engineering Graduate Schools

The University of California, Davis College of Engineering is now ranked 34th out of more than 200 graduate schools nationwide that offer Ph.D. degrees in engineering, according to the U.S. News and World Report's ranking of 2023-2024 Best Graduate Schools released April 24. The college is among the top 13 percent of Ph.D. conferring colleges and schools of engineering at public institutions.

Jennifer Sinclair Curtis Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Jennifer Sinclair Curtis, Distinguished Professor in the University of California, Davis, Department of Chemical Engineering, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Curtis, who served as the first female dean of the UC Davis College of Engineering from October 2015 through December 2020, is one of 16 current UC Davis faculty members in the academy.

Materials Science and Engineering Professor Emeritus Jeffery Gibeling Named Interim Vice Chancellor of Research

University of California, Davis, Chancellor Gary S. May has appointed Professor Emeritus Jeffery Gibeling to serve as the interim vice chancellor for research effective March 1. May will form a recruitment advisory committee soon to conduct a nationwide search for the next vice chancellor. He anticipates Gibeling will serve in the interim role for approximately six months.

2022 Outstanding Faculty, Excellence in Teaching and Other Faculty Award Recipients

Each year, the UC Davis College of Engineering recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching. Honorees for the college-wide Outstanding Faculty Awards are nominated by their departments and selected by the college’s faculty awards committee. In addition, the college honors faculty members selected by their departments to receive the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Sanjeevi Sivasankar Appointed Faculty Advisor to the Dean for Diversity and Inclusion

Sanjeevi Sivasankar, professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been appointed the College of Engineering’s faculty advisor to the dean for diversity and inclusion, effective September 1. In this role, Sivasankar will champion initiatives that promote DEI and support Dean Richard Corsi in attracting and retaining a diverse and inclusive college community.
