Two College of Engineering Graduate Students Hone Skills as "Professors for the Future"

Leora Goldbloom-Helzner and Abby Niesen know that achieving career success takes more than desire and hard work; it also requires skills and preparation.  The two fifth-year Ph.D. candidates are developing both in spades, thanks to earning coveted spots in the 15-member cohort of the 2022-2023 UC Davis Professors for the Future Program, or PFTF. 

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Director Kim Budil Wraps up Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series

The College of Engineering Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series wrapped up on April 19 with the director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, or LLNL, Kim Budil visiting campus. The 13th director of the LLNL, Budil oversees an annual operating budget of about $2.9 billion and a workforce of about 8,300 employees – about 3,000 of whom have been hired over the last three years.

STEM Outreach Program Helps Middle School Students SOAR

Student mentors from SOAR visit classrooms in-person once a month, host virtual events, coordinate field trips to the museum, and serve as role models for students throughout the academic year. They also partner with teachers from COA to reinforce their current curriculum and engage students with activities that encourage scientific problem-solving and exploration. 

2022 QuIST Colloquium Helps Set Global Stage for Quantum Information Science at UC Davis

Throughout the end of 2022, the College of Engineering funded a series of nine presentations from scholars across the globe and one professional from Google as part of its inaugural Quantum Information Science and Technology, or QuiST, Colloquium. The college recognized the effort as part of its Next Level strategic vision, which uplifts research and education that engineers a better world for all.  

Saving Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe’s waters are world-famous for their clarity and beautiful Sierra setting—they also provide key environmental and economic resources to Northern California. But with climate change and other human impacts degrading both the lake and its surrounding basin, urgent action is needed to preserve this jewel of the Sierra Nevada.

During the episode, Lund shed light on California's levees and if they can hold up against the pressures of climate change.

UC Davis Professors Bring Chemical Engineering Back to its Whiskey Roots

For UC Davis Chemical Engineering Professor Greg Miller, a new course began with a single sip.  While tasting whiskey with friends, he noted an unusual peppery flavor and became curious how it was produced. The more he looked, the more he realized that there wasn’t an easy answer, as most whiskey distillers rely on tried-and-true recipes instead of science.
